DESCRIPTION:Join us in person to connect\, share\, and celebrate at the IAW Networking Reception\, a free event bringing together the ParaPride community for Intersectionality Awareness Week 2026. \n\n\n\nIntersectionality Awareness Week (11–17 May) is an awareness campaign created by ParaPride\, and this is its second year running. The Networking Reception is your chance to meet the people behind it. Come face to face with some of the guest speakers who took part in the virtual Panel events throughout the week. Ask the questions you didn’t get to ask. Continue the conversations that mattered. \n\n\n\nThis is a welcoming space for everyone. Whether you’re already involved in the ParaPride community or discovering it for the first time\, you’ll find like-minded people here. Light refreshments will be provided\, so come ready to relax\, socialise\, and engage. \n\n\n\nIAW is rooted in pride\, empowerment\, beauty\, and strength. For disabled LGBTQ+ people of colour\, for queer immigrants\, for those navigating class\, culture\, family\, and belonging all at once\, the experience of inequality is rarely simple or singular. It is layered\, compounding\, and deeply personal. This event\, presented by ParaPride in partnership with Inclusion London\, centres those layered experiences – and asks what justice\, inclusion\, and a truly intersectional life can look like. \n\n\n\nCo-hosted by Faryal Velmi of Inclusion London and ParaPride co-founder Daniele Lul\, this panel creates space for an honest and expansive conversation about how overlapping systems of inequality shape access to opportunity\, community\, and a sense of belonging. How do disabled Black and brown queer people navigate spaces that were not built for them? What does it mean to hold an identity that is recognised by some and rendered invisible by others? And how do cultural and family dynamics\, the weight of stigma\, the complexity of faith\, the negotiation of queerness within immigrant communities – shape the way people move through the world? \n\n\n\nOur speakers bring rich and varied expertise to these questions. Alex Vasquez contributes a perspective shaped by personal and political engagement at multiple intersections of identity. Donna Jones\, based at London Metropolitan University\, brings academic insight into the structural dimensions of inequality. This is a conversation about barriers – but also about beauty\, resistance\, and the power of living fully and authentically at the intersection of all that we are.

For many\, later life brings new and compounding challenges: the creep of invisibility\, the risk of isolation\, the complexities of accessing care from systems that may not recognise or affirm who you are. When disability\, age\, and LGBTQ+ identity intersect\, the experience can be one of profound marginalisation – but also of extraordinary resilience\, community\, and pride hard-won over a lifetime. \n\n\n\nThis panel\, hosted by ParaPride ambassador Kim Tatum and co-founder Daniele Lul\, brings together voices from across decades of LGBTQ+ history and activism to reflect honestly on what it means to age within our communities. How do our identities shift and evolve across a lifespan? What happens when the body changes and the systems meant to support us fail to keep pace with who we are? And in the face of all of this\, how do older LGBTQ+ people continue to find community\, assert their rights\, and live with pride? \n\n\n\nOur panelists will explore the realities of isolation and the importance of community connection; the experience of holding a queer or trans identity across decades of social change; and the ongoing fight for legal rights\, recognition\, and dignified care. Speaking with us are Ted Brown\, a founding figure of the Gay Liberation Front UK with decades of frontline activism behind him; Sue Sanders of LGBT History Month UK and Schools OUT\, whose work has helped embed LGBTQ+ lives into the historical record; and Crissie from Women of Colour in Global Women’s Strike\, whose perspective foregrounds race\, gender\, and class alongside age and identity. This is a conversation about the past\, present\, and future of LGBTQ+ life – and a reminder that our elders are still here\, and still proud.

Healthcare systems\, community spaces\, support services\, and public life are rarely designed with both trans and disabled people in mind simultaneously\, and for those who live at that crossroads\, the gaps can be profound. This panel event\, hosted by Katie Hudson\, brings together a powerful group of advocates and activists to shine a light on the lived realities of trans disabled people in the UK and beyond. \n\n\n\nAcross themes of access\, dignity\, visibility\, and resistance\, our speakers will draw on personal experience and professional expertise to explore what it means to navigate a world that too often denies people the services they need\, the spaces they deserve\, and the recognition of their full humanity. From healthcare and employment to social care and community belonging\, this conversation asks hard questions about who our systems are truly built for – and what needs to change. \n\n\n\nJoining us are Bobbi Pickard from Trans in the City\, one of the UK’s foremost advocates for trans inclusion in the workplace; Hafsa Qureshi of TransActual\, an organisation at the forefront of trans-led research and advocacy; Sarah Stephenson from Seeing Things Differently\, bringing a disability-centred lens to the conversation; and the trailblazing Asifa Lahore\, a barrier-breaking figure in British South Asian LGBTQ+ culture. Together\, they represent a breadth of experience and activism that makes this an unmissable opening event for Intersectionality Awareness Week 2026.
